Smoffee’s believes in community. We believe community happens through a variety of ways. Here are just a few.
Community through Relationships The vision of Smoffee's is focused on promoting healthy community through a variety of means. The concept of community has changed so much in the last few years. It used to be when someone thought of community, they got pictures of church meetings, block parties, dances at the local VFW or just friends hanging out at the local coffee shop. Now when people talk about community we begin to also talk about online sites like Facebook, MySpace and Twitter along with social groups in places like Yahoo and people blogging about their self or organization at a variety of web sites. That’s not all; you now can also join online interest groups that bring the world just a little closer together. For instance, say you lived on the other side of the country and wanted real world testimonies and feedback of people who have eaten, stayed in a hotel or shopped in a certain place with that common interest; you could get information and feedback on sites such as tripadvisor.com, dine.com or urbanspoon.com

For us, connecting first in the community where we live is the most important mission we have. We desire to be a social hub where people can connect for business, political, religious and social meetings. For instance, when we envision community on this level we picture two long lost friends reconnecting, area religious leaders sharing ideas, groups of friends of all ages getting together and talking about whatever comes up or political parties holding meetings holding meet and greet times for sharing their ideas; just to name a few. We believe that we have created a warm inviting venue where people can do this.
Second, we believe in sharing our community with others. For instance when visitors come to visit enjoy watching some of our regulars sharing with them the sights, sounds and tastes of western Kansas. People out of state don’t realize what a warm heritage we have here in Kansas. We are more than hours and hours of wheat, corn and other crops they have no idea what is growing (milo). When visitors come into a small town, they are used to feeling out of place or uncomfortable. We try to treat everyone special that comes in and encourage friendship and dialog among everyone. We like to consider this kind our extended family.
Third we have made it a point to be a part of virtual community by bringing people from around the country in touch with our vision and spirit of what we are doing here in Colby. We have already seen people come in from around the country checking us out that have checked us out online through Facebook. We are now exploring new venues to share the “Smoffee’s Experience” through Twitter, MySpace, TripAdvisor.com, Dine.com, Google Local, and UrbanSpoon.com.
Community through Food & Drink Food seems to be in involved in every major life event, and virtually every social event. Smoffee’s serves a nice balance of comfort food and fun food / drink. Our desire is to provide the right type of food for whatever season of life you are in, so we can be part of it, for instance: Community happens here when the older crowd congregates in the morning for coffee and breakfast... Community happens here when the local fitness center gets together for fruit smoothies... Community happens here when tourists get to know some of our locals while having a Panini Sandwich and soup... Community happens when we deliver muffins to a family who just lost a loved one... or community happens here when the neighborhood pastors meet over coffee. We love to “break bread with our customers.”
Community through the Arts
We believe that community happens through a variety of shared experiences including laughter, joy, sadness, thought, pain and fear. Art tends to be the expression of these human experiences lived out in a focused medium. Smoffee’s is committed to provide a healthy family friendly venue where Art can be expressed. Community through Events & Happenings
We believe in promoting community, by creating community events and announcing current events and happenings for for businesses and organizations in tri-state region. First, we are looking to host some community events, such as arts and crafts classes (referenced above), history oriented classes, travel workshops, and other participatory and educational oriented events. If you have an idea for an event, contact us here.
To promote current events we have two event calendars. The first event calendar focuses only on Smoffee’s oriented events including daily hours, food specials and Smoffee’s only events. Click here to see it.
The second event calendar is a general Tri-State calendar (see map for area participation) where family friendly events can be posted on. We reserve the right to post whatever event we believe is in the scope of our own family friendly values. If you have an event you would like to post or would like to check out the list of events click here.
We also have a power-point style video that plays in our lobby by the cash register. If you are a non-profit and have an even you want to promote please contact us here. If you are a business and would like to let promote your business contact us to get more information. Here is a sample of what they look like.
We are all in need at some time in our life. Expressing that need to others gives them a chance to be a part of your life. Just because people sometimes can’t help doesn’t mean you should give up. Also, by helping others, even when you are in need can help you in the long run.
Get involved!
Community through Networking
We enjoy helping other local and national businesses. Click here to list your business or organization. Only those that are in the Tri-State area and those that are family friendly in nature will be considered.
Community through Giving & Receiving
We believe in encouraging people to give back through their time, energy and resources. Here is a list of companies, agencies and foundations that we encourage you to support. Most of all we encourage you to get out in your community and do something. Ideas included, babysitting occasionally for free, mowing a neighbor’s lawn (with their permission of course), helping someone move, helping paint, or taking someone you know who is lacking in resources shopping or to a day of fun.
Moreover, if you enjoy the events and atmosphere we have here at Smoffee's and would like to help us continue to grow and bring in more fun events please feel free to contribute.
